Nick Hand
Designer & Printmaker
EPISODE 8 | 54 MINS | JULY 2021
Nick trained as a graphic designer and founded the design studio, Thirteen in 1999, along with John Underwood and Danny Jenkins. He eventually branched out on his own working as graphic designer and photographer for brands like Howies and Hiut Denim.
In 2013, Nick helped set up The Letterpress Collective in the centre of Bristol, where people can go to learn the traditional art of typesetting and printing on the beautiful collection of fine printing presses.
Alongside The Letterpress Collective, Nick has also created The Department of Small Works where he showcases his collection of self-initiated projects, collaborations and commissioned work. These projects reflect Nick’s ability to bring together design, photography and print. And if all that wasn’t enough, Nick has also written three books.
When Nick isn’t in the printshop, he cycles around the country meeting and recording the conversations he has with local craftspeople who have a passion for making. He has cycled the entire coastline of the UK creating photofilms and uploading them at times from his tent. And in 2014, he rode a purpose-built bicycle to Mainz in Germany with a printing press on the back, printing postcards by artists along the way and sending them to people who had supported the project on Kickstarter.
Never miss a sound.
